Magic at Charlton Park Trout Fishery

May 11th, 2012

Magic at Charlton Park Trout Fishery

The last two seasons at Charlton Park have been quite hard after the end of May with low water flows making the river canal like

NOT ANY MORE!!!!

I know the floooding has been a misery to some but for the river a magical transformation has taken place

Mud had been removed from the bottom and the gravel bed re exposed , fantastic for next years spawning fish

Weed have been submerged and the rushes clogging the river will be drowned and killed off

Ranculus will re appear and with it the fly life so important to all living creatures of the river

A half days fishing today showd an excellent head of wild fish on a gold head

Beautiful fish with fabolous markings

Day tickets are available to Charlton Park on request

The mayfly however will be a couple of weeks late I think due to the cold deep water

"LOVELEY"

South Devon Bass Bumble promoted by the lure forum

May 10th, 2012

South Devon Bass Bumble  promoted by the lure forum

A great Bank Holiday week end in Challborough South Devon trying to catch the Bass

The wind was all wrong and from the North producing flat seas

Around here South Westerly winds are required to turn the fish on

Arriving on the Friday I spent my day fishing the river Avon on the flooding tide,

It really looked good for the bass but I didnt connect

Instead sea trout were running the estuary and changing to a Hokkaido Spin Jig I was getting numerous follows…

Eventually one connected but didnt stay on long enough for the photo

Great fun though

The next day a well organised event with over 60 people participating hit the coast.

Wrasse on soft plastics were the only fish which co operated and i managed to get one measuring 40cm off the front of Burgh Island on the incoming tide on a Molix Larvae

Its a great Soft Plastic with plenty of mass for casting but a great action.Fishing with no weight is key.

A great thanks to Nick Bennett who organised the bumble and a great thank you to all the kind people from the lure forum who I met

He was rewarded with a nice bass on the Monday when the weather changed to a nice south westerly

Its a great way to get into Bass fishing wuth lures and i know they are being organised across the country

Drop into the forum for a peek

Some sleepy early morning anglers

A really nice bunch of people

A rainy week end on the HRF

May 2nd, 2012

A rainy week end on the HRF

A flying weekend visit to Guernsey for a family event gave me a bit of an opportunity to play,

the tides were small so it was the wrasse that got my attention on the HRF using all sorts of

soft plastics.

The wet weather didnt really get in the way as you can fish a lee shore to stay out of the driving rain

The bites you get are a sharp tap tap.

Bigger fish are a heavier pull

It just shows you can get results in the crap weather we have been getting

Monday was nicer but the fish were harder to catch.

The deeper water was actually less productive which is not unusual

The boulders here were much more productive.

Everyone should try soft plastics for wrasse, its great fun

Heres to the summer

APRIL TROUT FISHING AT CHARLTON PARK

The fishing at Charlton Park is now well under way and all this  rain will ensure a great Mayfly season

Early Olives and Hawthorn have kept the anglers busy in the early clear cool water

The fish have been really spooky but careful indian jungle tactics have taken bags of fish to 2lb to dry fly and nymph

Early Bluebells in the wood beside the Tetbury Avon

An early season trout from the Tetbury Avon

And the Mayfly will soon be here!!

Feedback on the Alcedo Modularis 420 Waggler Rod

April 14th, 2012

FEEDBACK ON THE ALCEDO MODULARIS 420 WAGGLER ROD

MODULARIS MATCH

ISNT IT JUST GREAT WHEN YOU HAVE A HAPPY CUSTOMER…..

Hi Bill, it's the best 14ft float rod I've ever had the privelege to hold.
It's quite unigue inasmuch it works well as both a waggler and a stick float rod.
It's light – but strong! Just tamed a 4lb 14oz chub on waggler on the New Junction Canal in South Yorkshire with it (not by luck, because I was in total control due to the rod!).
The 450-25 is also a good rod but is heavier, and due to my arthritic hands is not holdable for 5 hours, whereas the 420 is!

After many sessions float fishing I found myself needing a matched pair, and it had to be the 420.

I have seen you get minor mentions in Angling Times for your gear on a regular basis, but it would be good for Mark Sawyer ( AT tackle editor ) to field test a Modularis 420 – 25, he has got to give it a triple A rating, especially considering the price!

Once my second one arrives I will be willing to let a couple of my mates borrow one (cos they've picked it up and said "that's nice!"),
and hopefully word will spread ……

That said, the Modularis's are wrongly ringed !
Both my 450s have had another butt ring added (by me) between the Italia butt ring and the reel to counteract the large sag in the reel line (which can be a right pain) between the reel and the butt ring (around 300mm more than it should be be). Unfortunately the 420 is about 150mm too long on the butt ring, so to re-ring would need the original butt ring moving as well as a new butt ring adding closer to the reel.
I can put up with this ringing issue on the 420 due to it's other strengths, but if their butt ring was 150mm closer to the reel it would be absolutely perfect!
Suspect you cannot influence the Italia manufacturers on this isue, but might be worth asking them why they have ringing which allows the line to sag so much (bearing in mind I use 0.130 reel lines which are incredibily lightweight so doesn't sag without reason).

Wishing you well,
Kevin
