Learning to use Soft plastic lures in Guernsey

LEARNING NEW WAYS TO FISH IN THE CHANNEL ISLANDS

Its never to late they say to learn something new and a week in my home Island of Guernsey this October has given me plenty of time to experiment

I have fished Guernsey  since a by in the seventies and have seen the way the fishing has gone over the years ,

My favourite method was always surfcasting ,orginally for the plaice in the autumn and summer and winteer fishing for mullet with bread.

The summers were for float fishing for Garfish and Mackerel ,the autumn for red mullet, black bream and congers from the beach.

Bass were rare.

Along came the live sandeel revolution of the nineties and with the decline in the red mullet and Plaice the bass showd a srong resurgance.

Light line fishing with live sandeel was  succesfull for many years for the bass, only the last 3 years or so has shown a marked downturn as the bass too have become overpressurised.

Black bream are a great species for the Autumn from Rock stations and the castle lighthouse on bait such as scallop frills .

In the meanwhile my fishing in the UK has become more fly fishing based with occasional boat trips for pollack and cod and some river wye barbel.

Guernsey was a place to fish in the summer off the beach with the kids catching the occasional bass or handlining competitions  off the rocks for Wrasse .

Then along came the rockfishing revolution using soft plastics.

Fishing pressure has really effected the bass sport over the past few years

Lure fishing with soft plastics has enabled me to reinvent my fishing, going to spots I have never been able to try before for fear of being broken or snagged as well as presenting lures to fish that havnt been fished for much before.

Rockfish or wrasse are the mainstay of this sport in the Channel Islands.

A GREEN COLOURED FISH ON AN SP AND LRF ROD  RATED 0 5 – 5 g

TO spice it up a bit LRF rods and reels with very light braid are used

I have a Major Craft Saltz from Pro Lures Direct rated with lures from .5 g to 5 g

The tip looks it comes from a quiver tip but it has lots of backbone to help get the fish out of the rocks.

with 8lb braid it a perfect set up for fishing with smaller SP lures.

I used a lot of AYU type colours ( clear fish)  on the sandy bottoms where sandells and Roselet( a type of small smelt) are seem and HWL lures elsewhere.

Fish as light as you can with as little weight as you can.

I was lucky enough on the first few days to meet fellow JBG forum member Andy Marquis one evening and we tried some LRF

pollacking at night around the harbour. It was good meeting him  and confirmed that to get among the Bass during the day I was going to have to travel to Herm, a small Island of the west coast of Guernsey

The netting pressure was less and the tides.being quite large, perfect for some low tide spots I know.

The first day in Herm was low cloud and Mist

LOW CLOUD AND A MISTY DAY,PERFECT FOR BASS

Fishing the tide down was not spectacular bur wading out as the tide began to flood into the fast main stream of South going tide things really switched on using an AYU megabass X slayer or even better a KEITECH sandeel type imitation called sexy impact..

Great for the Rockies and Bass

Its really difficult stopping heavy fish on LRF gear in a fast current but paitence is the key as well as some praying on the side

Bass fight high in the water so dont snag but take a lot of line and can go around rocks,

BASS ON THE LRF AND S.P X SLAYER

The fishing was to cast across the current and let the plastic swim round in the tide.

The soft tip of the rod would suddenly load up.allowing the fish to get the lure in its mouth before the clutch on the reel starts to howl.

Just like Salmon fishing really.

The Rockfish liked more of an uptide ded drift presentation with a bit of jiggling.

These were more problematical to get out of the weed but often with some paitence it was possible and a 4lb fish on LRF gear is a prize indeed

There even was a little suprise fish……

I was able to fish Herm a couple of times and found a great gulley which as the tide rushed around and filled it was a great Bass producer  nearly every cast for a 30 minute period. This involved just looking around as the tide cam eup and staying in the shallowest water, not wading deep but following the fish as they came up with the tide.

Mind you as each fish took quite a while to get in this wasnt a mark where you were going to catch loads!

BASS ON THE LRF, GREAT FUN

It was noticable that on the second visit the tide was smaller and the sun much brighter,

It didnt effect the Wrasse so much but the Bass were scarcer.

I cant wait to try this mark in the Dark

brighter weather equalled less bass

For fun I tried some HRF fishing as the tide went down using Molix Larva

THIS LURE IS 5 INCHES LONG BUT IT GOT THE HITS FROM THE BIG rOCKIES FISHED DEAD DRIFT IN VERY FAST TIDE RIPS

bigger rockies on the HRF and big SP lures

Alcedo 40g Hokkaido Spin and aluminium Pro

Sometimes you get smashed ,theres nothing you seem to be able to do.

A great looking lure is Nojos Maddies from Jacks LRF,you do need extra weight with these as they fish very light and stream out.

A ribbon type worm is the best description. It has great movement in the tide

ONE ON THE PURPLE HWL LURE FROM THE SHALLOWEST ROCKIEST BIT OF BAY IMAGINABLE

A GRAT CHALLENGE REGARDLESS OF SIZE.

t

sorry about the focus but it was the biggest Rocky I caught so here it is

The biggest Rocky was 4lb plus and was caught over a mix of sand and weed just out of the tide as the plastic fluttered to the bottom.

It remained stuck in the weed for 10 minutes before it moved out and pressure could be put on it to move onto  the sandy bottom.

The biggest Bass went 5lb plus and caused many heatstopping LRF as it thrassed across the surface in 3 feet of fast moving water.
